In this course, you’ll improve your ability to communicate effectively in all areas of your life.

By the end of this course, you’ll be well-prepared for success in your future academic pursuits, including the compulsory Grade 11 university or college preparation course. You’ll also develop essential skills for communicating effectively in your personal and professional life.
Prerequisite: English, Grade 9 (Academic or Applied)
This unit will focus on reading and writing for a specific purpose. Students will learn reading comprehension tools and strategies such as inference and summary. By the unit’s end, they will be able to write, deliver, and comprehend oral and written works.
The unit will introduce the plot, setting, character, and other literary devices such as imagery. Through short stories, students will focus on the main elements and ideas and learn to find meaning through comprehension. Further, students will learn how to make text-to-self connections and develop, express, and support opinions to write persuasive essays.
The unit will explore symbolic and character archetypes. Students will research secondary and tertiary sources and look at reflection, journaling, different media forms, and comprehension strategies, and develop the ability to make inferences based on the information available in the text. Further, students will look at literary devices like the hero’s journey and analyze oral and mixed media.
In this unit, students will use tools introduced earlier in this course to make text-to-text connections, analyze short animated films and dystopian texts, and infer meaning from textual and graphical features of literary works. Students will also learn to identify the topic, purpose, audience, and presentation styles of oral and written works, and use these skills to generate, explore, and focus ideas for creating their own dystopian work.Â
